In an ever-changing sports karate scene, the best of the best are looking for the latest methods to improve their performances. A very small group met in Osaka, Japan to share their ideas and training methods in a relaxed and highly beneficial 3-day training camp. They discussed drills, skills, conditioning and optimal techniques to be awarded points from referees. Champ DVD recorded it all. Evolution Martial Arts Instructor Raymond Morcomb says he was ‘very privileged’ to be among the group of 8 karate practitioners. John Georgas and Australian Champion Tsuneari Yahio completed the Aussie contingent. From the Japanese national kumite team were 2 men and 3 women. You can see Araga Ryutaro, Shinohara Hiroto, Kobayashi Miki, Shinohara Nagisa and Nakamura Shiori in action on the DVD.
Each person taught the group the latest training ideas they had discovered. The group sought boxing strategy from Raymond. Having studied both boxing and karate extensively Raymond was able to choose particular elements of the boxing game and apply them to karate kumite. The new ideas are hoped to provide the athletes with an unexpected strategy that will give them the edge in their matches to come.
Rays boxing knowledge comes from almost 20 years of experience within the sport. Although he himself never fought due to his vision disability, Ray has sparred countless rounds with amateur and professional fighters. His younger brother Kelly was a NSW and SE QLD state boxing champion. As a youngster Ray would train up to 5 times per week at the famous Newtown boxing gym in Sydney under the world-renown boxing training Johnny Lewis. At that time there were some of Australia and in fact the worlds best boxers… two of which included 4 times world champion Kostya Tszyu and the world-rated international star Justin Rousel (just to name a few).
